Safety Notice to Consumers – September 20, 2006
GAMO USA Corp. has recently discovered a potential safety problem with certain models of GAMO air rifles sold between June 29, 2006 and September 20, 2006.The GAMO air rifle models subject to this notice are the Hunter Pro, Hunter Sport, Shadow Sport, and F1200 from serial number 04-1C-415577-06 through 04-1C-579918-06.We believe some of these rifles may accidentally discharge, or not be able to be cocked or fired, if a scope mount is not installed properly on the air rifle. You should stop using these air rifles immediately.
The air rifles subject to this notice have two holes (one slighter larger than the other) in the receiver and were sold with a scope mount in the same package as the rifle. The two holes are near each other. The larger hole is the one closer to the butt stock (the more rearward hole). The smaller hole is the one closer to the barrel (the more forward hole). The mount (or other mounts acquired elsewhere) can be installed on the rifle by the consumer or others. When the recoil pin for the scope mount is placed into the larger, more rearward hole, the mount is installed properly and the rifle functions properly.
If the recoil pin for the scope mount is placed in the smaller, more forward hole, cocking the rifle may be impossible or extremely difficult and the rifle may accidentally discharge under specific conditions. Specifically, if the air rifle has been cocked, it may be not be possible to discharge it by pulling the trigger. Loosening the recoil pin to remove the mount under these conditions may cause the gun to discharge accidentally.
Therefore, GAMO strongly recommends the following:
1.If you have installed or have had installed on your air rifle the scope mount that came with your rifle (or another scope mount), it is necessary to remove the scope mount to make sure the air rifle is not cocked and cannot discharge by following the instructions below. Removing the mount (and therefore the recoil pin) may cause the air rifle to discharge. Therefore, these directions must be followed to allow the gun to be discharged in a safe manner. (If you would rather not remove the scope mount as described below, make sure the air rifle’s safety is engaged, store the air rifle in a safe, locked location, and contact GAMO by using the information at the end of this notice.);
-First, follow all gun handling safety rules. Make sure the air rifle’s safety is engaged. (The safety prevents the trigger from being pulled to fire the air rifle but will not prevent the accidental discharge as described above.) Make sure you are in an area where it is safe to discharge your air rifle. Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction and wear shooting glasses at all times.
-Second, remove the scope from the mount, leaving the mount securely mounted on the air rifle. Removing the scope from the mount should not cause an accidental discharge, because the mount should remain in position on the receiver.
-Third, with the allen wrench in one hand, firmly grasp the air rifle with the other hand, at all times making sure you keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. To loosen the recoil pin, insert the allen wrench into the recoil pin and turn it slowly counterclockwise until the air rifle discharges. If the air rifle does not discharge, it was not cocked. Do not cock it. -Complete the removal of the scope mount and set the scope mount aside.
Your air rifle should now be unloaded and uncocked. Following all gun handling safety rules, test fire your rifle a couple of times by cocking it and firing it in a safe direction. Then engage the safety and store the air rifle in a safe location. Please check this website later for additional information and guidance.
2. If no scope mount is installed on your rifle, do not install one. In this condition, your rifle does not have the potential safety problem. Please check this website later for additional information and guidance.
3. If your rifle came in the box with a scope already mounted, do not remove the scope and the mount. In this condition, your rifle does not have the potential safety problem and can be used safely. Please check this website later for additional information and guidance.
Air rifles with only one hole in the receiver are not subject to this notice.
